Many Renaissance artists depicted the image of St. Catherine. The well-known Italian craftsman Raphael, who depicted the Christian martyr St. Catherine, who leaned on a wheel, was no exception. The canvas was allegedly created in 1507, when Rafael decided to move from Florence to Rome.

It should be mentioned that Rafael borrowed the bend of the woman’s body from Leonardo da Vinci (the painting “Leda”), and drew some features from the group of Hellenistic sculptures that he saw in Rome. It was they who inspired the artist to write a masterpiece of art.

Why did Raphael turn to the image of St. Catherine of Alexandria? According to legend, it was her who Jesus called his bride, giving the ring. Under the rule of Maximian, emperor of the 4th century, Catherine accused him of venerating paganism and declared that she truly believed in Jesus Christ.

Imperial greatness could not convince the saint, she was not tempted by possible glory and wealth. After a categorical refusal to renounce her faith, Catherine was thrown into prison. The saint herself laid her head under the executioner's sword, and after the execution Catherine's body disappeared.

It is impossible not to notice that Raphael with a brush and paints depicted the female ideal of the Renaissance. A little pinkish skin color, blush on the cheek, copper hair, thick black eyebrows, round oval face, slightly full shoulders. This is what the woman looks like in the picture - a symbol of vitality, which attracts with spiritual purity and strong faith.

The painting "St. Catherine" has a religious content. This painting by Raphael is considered one of the best in Italian art, which presents the viewer with an artistic image of St. Catherine of Alexandria. The canvas has an excellent black and white solution and marks the mastery of the artist's style.
